Emergency abdominal surgery after solid organ transplantation: a systematic review

2016

Aims: Due to the increasing number of solid organs transplantations, emergency abdominal surgery in transplanted patients is becoming a relevant challenge for the general surgeon. The aim of this systematic review of the literature is to analyze morbidity and mortality of emergency abdominal surgery performed in transplanted patients for graft-unrelated surgical problems. Methods: The literature search was performed on online databases with the time limit 1990–2015. Studies describing all types of emergency abdominal surgery in solid organ transplanted patients were retrieved for evaluation. Results: Thirty-nine case series published between 1996 and 2015 met the inclusion criteria and were…

Periodontitis as a risk factor for head and neck cancer

2020

Background Periodontitis may be associated with the development of head and neck cancer (HNC). A literature review was conducted to understand the possible association between them. Material and Methods Articles published in the PubMed database from January 1999 and May 2020 were retrieved. Limitations of the studies and biological mechanisms were discussed. Results A total of 4,232 articles were found. Of these, 13 were analyzed according to inclusion criteria. Most papers found some association between periodontitis and HNC, although differences in periodontal evaluation, sample size, study design and tumor sites were observed. Porphyromonas gingivalis appears to increase the chance of bo…

Cytomegalovirus infection management in solid organ transplant recipients across European centers in the time of molecular diagnostics: An ESGICH sur…

2017

Background Scant information is available about how transplant centers are managing their use of quantitative molecular testing (QNAT) assays for active cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection monitoring in solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients. The current study was aimed at gathering information on current practices in the management of CMV infection across European centers in the era of molecular testing assays. Methods A questionnaire-based cross-sectional survey study was conducted by the European Study Group of Infections in Immunocompromised Hosts (ESGICH) of the Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID). The invitation and a weekly reminder with a personal link to …

Forty-One Recent Cases of Invasive Zygomycosis From a Global Clinical Registry.

2009

Abstract Abstract 4736 Background Invasive zygomycosis accounts for a significant proportion of all invasive fungal diseases (IFD), but clinical data on the clinical course and treatment response is limited. Methods Fungiscope” - A Global Rare Fungal Infection Registry is a university-based case registry that collects data of patients with rare IFD, using a web-based electronic case form at www.fungiscope.net. Results Fourty-one patients with invasive zygomycosis were registered. Five were pediatric (12.2%), 28 (68.3%) male. Median age was 49 years (range 2-88). Most common underlying conditions were malignancies (n=26; 63.4%), diabetes mellitus (n=7; 17%) and solid organ transplant (n=4; 9…

Non-wild-type cryptococcosis in a child with multivisceral organ transplant who owned bird pets.

2020

Cryptococcosis is the third most common invasive fungal infection in solid-organ transplant recipients, although it is rarely reported in transplanted children. It typically appears as a late-onset infection with central nervous system or pulmonary involvement. We present a case of cryptococcosis caused by a non-wild strain in a 10-year-old child who owned two pet birds, and review the existent literature.

Cytomegalovirus infection in solid organ transplantation.

2012

Cytomegalovirus infection remains a serious threat to solid transplant recipients. Despite advances in this field, there are still difficulties in the diagnosis of the disease and there are questions about the best and most cost-effective strategy to prevent infection and its direct and indirect consequences in the short and long term. All these points are discussed and updated in this chapter.

Oral health-related quality of life of patients after solid organ transplantation is not affected by oral conditions:results of a multicentre cross-s…

2020

Background This multicentre cross-sectional study aimed in examination of oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of patients after solid organ transplantation (SOT). Material and Methods Patients after SOT (liver, lung and heart) at one out of three German centers (Goettingen, Essen, Leipzig) were included. For comparison, a healthy control (HC) was recruited. OHRQoL was assessed by German short form of oral health impact profile (OHIP G14). Oral examination comprised: decayed-, missing- and filled-teeth index (DMF-T), remaining teeth and periodontitis severity. Results In total, 196 patients after SOT and 130 HC with comparable age, gender and smoking habits were included (p>0.05). D…

Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Solid Organ Transplantation (MiSOT) Fourth Meeting

2013

The Fourth Expert Meeting of the Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Solid Organ Transplantation (MiSOT) Consortium took place in Barcelona on October 19 and 20, 2012. This meeting focused on the translation of preclinical data into early clinical settings. This position paper highlights the main topics explored on the safety and efficacy of mesenchymal stem cells as a therapeutic agent in solid organ transplantation and emphasizes the issues (proper timing, concomitant immunossupression, source and immunogenicity of mesenchymal stem cells, and oncogenicity) that have been addressed and will be followed up by the MiSOT Consortium in future studies.
